Whalley Bells: 2024 Centenary Project Phase 2

10th August 2024

Due to some work at another tower being postponed due to bats in their belfry, Nicholson's Engineering started phase 2 re-assembly of our bells early on week beginning the 5th August.

Most of the 8 bells have been re-hung on new bearings with new headstock pads. Most of the new rope pulleys have been fitted and many new fixing bolts for the bells and wheels. All the main wheel rims have been reinforced with new stainless steel wood screws and new bolts fitted to attach them to the bells. Many bells have been turned over to check the stays and sliders. All ready now to complete the job and fit tower sound control in early September.

Many thanks to all our volunteer helpers Dave, Ian, Alan and Liz who have put in all the hard work during the week assisting Ian the bell hanger from Nicholson's Engineering. One of the biggest jobs was transporting all the heavy lifting equipment, tools and bell fittings all the way up the tower. Was easily done using a human chain on the spiral staircase which worked really well and saved much time and effort !

There is now a wait until September to complete the work and fit tower sound control. The ringing room will be re-decorated starting on the 13th August to remove loose plaster and improved lighting will be installed during this time.
