The Parish Church of
Saint Mary and All Saints, Whalley
The fact that our lightest bell weighs more than 5cwt limits the lower age range, but we have rarely been without a band comprising under 18's to quite senior citizens (some of whom have over 50 years service).
Our ringers are members of the Lancashire Association of Change Ringers, which basically covers the area of the "old" Lancashire before local government reorganisation. At the end of 2010, the Association had 1,062 members. Comparing this with 1,024 in 1953, there is no way that bell ringing can be regarded as "in decline!"
The Lancashire Association is affiliated to the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers which over-sees all aspects of bell ringing including teaching, restoration and preservation (liaising with the Church Buildings Council, English Heritage, etc.), and more specialist technicalities such as the keeping of peal records, and determining rules for "Methods" - the "music" which bell ringers use.
